Hemorrhoids During Pregnancy

They burn, they itch, they hurt, and they may bleed. They totally suck. They are hemorrhoids.

What are hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are enlarged veins in the rectum and anus. They are common during pregnancy, mostly in the third trimester, and even more so in postpartum.

Dear God, why?

There could be a few reasons why you are experiencing these assholes in your asshole.

  1. Your constipated- Bearing down causes more pressure on the rectum.

  2. You are over exerting yourself- I know you want to nest but give someone else the job of heavy lifting.

  3. You have a human growing inside you and they are putting pressure on all the veins down there.

Don’t worry! There are ways to deal with them.

  1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Avoid constipation if you can.

  2. Make sure your diet contains plenty of roughage. Fiber, fruits and veggies. Again, anything to keep you from constipation.

  3. Ice

  4. Sitz bath- Fill the tub with enough warm water to reach your hips and add a heaping scoop of Epsom salt. If you want to get creatives, here is a great website with some other options for herbal sitz baths.

  5. Hemorrhoid cream. Preparation H is an easy quick fix a lot of times. Just make sure you run it by your healthcare provider.

  6. Get off your feet! The more pressure you put on your bottom, the worse it can get. Find something to binge watch and get comfy on your side.

  7. Witch Hazel. You can buy tucks pads, or I suggest just soaking a panty liner. This is also great for postpartum healing.

When to talk to your provider

If all the other methods aren’t working out, your healthcare provider may be able to prescribe a more heavy duty cream or steroids.

If at any point you experience bleeding, call your healthcare provider.
