Early Signs and Symptoms of Pregnancy

Early pregnancy can bring on new feelings both emotional and physical. While they are entirely normal, it can be overwhelming for a person who has not experienced these symptoms before.

Nausea- Most commonly known as morning sickness, but don’t let the name fool you. Nausea can strike any time of the day. This is due to the rapid progression of hormones and will generally subside towards the beginning of the second trimester.

Spidey senses: We wish… But seriously, increased smell and taste can be a give away to early pregnancy before you even know you are. Something that you once loved to eat is suddenly repulsive and the smell of it triggers your “morning” sickness. This can last for a short time or the entire pregnancy. Don’t worry, you will be back to eating your normal pre-pregnancy foods in no time!

Sore/swollen Boobs: Usually a favorite side effect of pregnancy to partners but not necessarily for you. This is your body’s way of preparing itself to feed your baby. If your breasts are tender, ice packs are your friend.

Increased/Decreased libido: This one can go either way. Damn those hormones! If you experience a decrease in libido, it can suck but is totally normal, people tend to regain it after the first trimester. If you are one of those people who feel extra frisky, enjoy the next nine months of not worrying about contraceptives!

Exhaustion- Growing another human is a lot of work! Your body is going through all kinds of changes and rapidly at that. Of course it is going to drain your energy! If at all possible, sleep when you can.  Your body is telling you what you need and it is important to listen. And like most other early pregnancy symptoms, this should ease up towards the end of your first trimester.

Some people don’t experience any of these early symptoms and don’t realize they are pregnant until they miss a period and see two blue lines on a stick.

Pro tip: the $1 pregnancy tests are Wal Mart are just as effective at the fancy expensive ones. If you are still unsure, make an appointment with your OB.
